South Devon Tour 2021

Day 1 - Harwich to Bledington, Cotswolds

Arrival Harwich was 0630 Sunday morning and we were off the ferry quite quickly. After a breakfast at the local Premier Inn we set of heading west through the Essex and Suffolk countryside towards the Cotswolds. Weather was superb on the way and the temperature was soon up around 25 degrees which wasn't bad for an early autumn day in UK. Roads were great and we were able to make some good time however being a Sunday we struggled to find anywhere for lunch. Regrettably we ended up all the way to our hotel without getting anything but nevertheless it was a welcome to arrive at our pub inn in Bledington. The Kings Head has great rooms and great food. After a good dinner it was early retirement ready for day 2.

Day 2 - Bledington to Milton Combe.

Again an early start as we had quite some miles to do we headed out west again towards Burton on the Water. A quick photo - op and on our way. Again the temperature was soon up beyond 25 degrees and we were grateful for the breeze as we headed south west. Through Cheddar gorge and a lunch stop just outside Cheddar and again south west through Exeter and down into Dartmoor. Exeter was a nightmare due to road closures for the "Tour of Britain'' cycle race but eventually after some really hairy tiny lanes we were onto the expanse of Dartmoor. Weather was spectacular. After a few stops we headed towards our overnight stay in the Who'd Have Thought It'' Inn in Milton Combe. Dinner a few drinks and again happy to get to bed!.

Day 3 - Devon and Cornwall

First stop was Plymouth Hoe so we headed east towards Ivybridge and then on down through Plympton into Plymouth. Again weather was spectacular so the views from the Hoe were amazing. Then off to Torpoint to pick up the ferry and then down to Cremyll for lunch at the Edgecombe Arms. After lunch we headed north into Cornwall and finally back through Dartmoor from north to south and back to Milton Combe again.

Day 4 - Milton Combe to Hawkley

Unfortunately Wednesday morning started wet. We had expected heavy thunderstorms but thankfully this did not happen. Nevertheless it was on with the waterproofs as we headed out across Dartmoor again for the last time. After about 15 mins the rain had gone and we were able to dodge the showers as we headed directly East to Bournemouth, Southampton and eventually to our overnight stop in the tiny village of Hawkley near Liss in Hampshire. A great dinner and beers at the Hawkley Inn and early retirement for the last leg of our tour.

Day 5 - Hawkley to Harwich

The final leg of our Devon Tour. Heading North through Alton and beyond we avoided as much as possible the London traffic and once north of London and again into Essex the roads opened up for us as sun came out. A great last leg to Colchester for our PCR Tests and dinner at Toby Carvery and after a scare with a lost passport we were finally at the ferry in time for boarding. A superb tour with excellent weather and overnight stays. well worth a revisit in future! Roll on 2022!
